Sneaking down the streets is easier said than done. Once the shielding drops, several men taking a piss on the side of a building nearly mess themselves at my sudden appearance. My glare has them turning their gazes back towards their task. I trudge forward, flipping my hood up so I can glance behind me more often without being conspicuous. Iâm still on high alert despite Myrlâs magic bubble.
There is no exact address, merely a map, depicting a fountain and the names of several stores near it. Throughout my day time trips, Iâve scoped out much of the area, and I know where this is located. It would be hard to set up an ambush in this spot, which is probably why the person wanted me to meet me here. Theyâand subsequently, Iâcan easily dash away if something goes wrong.
Beneath my boots, the street flattens despite it still being cobblestone. The Elite area is patrolled often, a disadvantage since the watchman hates me now.
If he ever liked me to begin with.
Scoffing at the idea of this pathetic man holding sway over my trip home, I near my destination and slow down my approach. The orbs here are not only bright, but ornately designed, unlike in the less influential parts of the city. Here there are no dilapidated houses or windows without glass. No, everything here is immaculate and clean. Around the fountain, at the spot marked with an âxâ, a lumpy, human sized figure sits cloaked. Without drawing too much attention, I stroll over to the body, scanning around for any warnings of ill intent. Much to my surprise, there only appears to be merriment and alcohol. The rich here live well.
Once I reach the man, I pull the oldest trick in the book, and pretend to grab something I dropped. âAre you the one who sent the note?â
A familiar voice answers. âYes, I am.â
In shock, I snap my head up to find Hronu, the retired Guard Elite from the tavern, watching me curiously. âYou?â
âYes me, Garde. And really? Pretending to search the ground for something? Isnât that a little obvious?â His sneer flings memories of the other day forward. He and his âfriendâ were a bit too insulting when it came to my wife, an offense I do not forgive easily.
I grunt at him. His rude behavior prior continues to rub me the wrong way. âPerhaps. What are you doing here?â
âWell, Garde, if you must know, Iâm here to help you. Follow me.â Without a glance back, he takes off down the street, leaving no other option but to follow. The man himself is short for a human, so the snickers we receive are likely due to the disparity in height.
Or merely the fact that I am a Garde.
Finaoâs blessing of training saves me because Hronuâs twisting and turning path, a technique for losing a tail, would have left me baffled and lost without it. It does, however, lead us deeper into the Elite range. Their class brackets are disgustingly apparent here.
